Controversy over Sanjay Gupta Nomination

India-West, Posted: Jan 20, 2009

Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., and two medical associations are opposing the possible nomination of CNN's chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta to the post of surgeon general.

Conyers, in a "Dear Colleague" letter to members of the Senate, said Gupta doesn't have the necessary experience for the job. He questioned whether Gupta has the medical background or credibility to oversee the U.S. Public Health System (USPHS). Gupta is a neurosurgeon and on the faculty of Emory University's School of Medicine in Atlanta.

The surgeon general manages the USPHS corps and its 6,000 physicians who respond to public health crises and such national emergencies as an outbreak of diseases.

Gupta and Obama met in Chicago last November. Obama reportedly offered him the job at the end of a two-hour meeting.
