Migrant Workers Growing Marijuana in Colorado

EFE, Posted: Aug 28, 2009

DENVER -- Undocumented Mexican farm workers are being smuggled to the Colorado mountains to work in clandestine marijuana plantations, according to local authorities. Mike Skinner, an investigator with the United States Forest Service, said he has found three large marijuana fields in Colorado in the past two months and has seized almost 20,000 plants. The resale value of the drug on the street is estimated at $40 million. In the latest raid, which occurred Aug. 12 in Pike National Forest near the town Deckers, federal agents seized 14,000 plants and arrested two people. Though the camp had been deserted before the authorities arrived, federal investigators believe that many of the growers are undocumented immigrants smuggled from Mexico with the promise of jobs.
