Michigan Reverses Itself on Driver's Licenses for DACA Recipients

Posted: Feb 01, 2013

In a reversal of its previous position, the Michigan Secretary of State's office said Friday it would begin issuing driver's licenses to immigrants who qualify for the federal government's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Michigan's original position to deny driver's licenses to DACA recipients was based on state law that prohibits granting driver's licenses to individuals who are not lawfully present in the country. New federal guidelines released last month, however, clarified that DACA recipients are, in fact, lawfully present. Last week the state of Iowa reversed its own driver's license policy. This leaves two states, Arizona and Nebraska, that have said they would not grant driver's licenses to DACA recipients.
