Conservationist Wins Goldman Prize for Protecting Polish Valley

Editor's Note: The Goldman Prize for protecting the environment was given to six people this year, including Małgorzata Górska. Górska was honored for her efforts to protect what is called The Last Great Wilderness of Europe, the Rospuda in her native Poland. This valley holds vast tracks of pristine primeval forest and wetlands which are reservoirs of diversity for the rest of Europe. It is also home to endangered birds, orchids, wolves, elks, and wild boars. When she learned of plans to build a massive highway directly through the valley, linking Helsinki to Warsaw, Górska joined forces with other environmental groups and approached the Polish government. They were adamant they would not consider any other route for the highway. Górska took up the challenge.
