ICE Feels the Heat

La Opinin, Pilar Marrero Posted: Apr 05, 2010

LOS ANGELES, Calif.--Pro-immigrant activists pressed the White House to accelerate reforms on the immigration detention system, calling it an emergency, reported La Opinin.

The Spanish daily said a New York Times report about the lack of medical care and conditions of Haitian refugees in detention precipitated the call for urgent changes.

Frankly, Im tired of waiting, of waking up every morning, grabbing the newspaper and seeing a new horror story about the life of people detained by immigration, David Leopold, president elect of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), told the daily.

La Opinin reported that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been feeling the heat of several news reports and independent studies that criticize its handling of priorities and detainees conditions.

Theres a direct conflict between Obama, a president that affirms that he wants reforms that would make the tasks of immigration authorities more humane and fair and an agency that doesnt work. If those changes cant be made with the current leadership, then change it, said Frank Sharry, executive director of Americas Voice during a national teleconference.
