CA Legislators Seek Appology for Chinese Exclusion

World Journal, news, Posted: Jun 27, 2009

California State Assemblymembers Paul Fong and Kevin De Leon jointly proposed a bill that would require the state to address its history of discrimination against Chinese immigrants. The legislation, ACR 42: Chinese Americans in California, was introduced last Wednesday, according to the World Journal, and it asks the California government to apologize for its persecution of Chinese immigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries. At the same time, it would recognize Chinese immigrants contributions to the state. Fong pointed out that California pushed the Chinese Exclusion Act at the federal level in 1882. The Act was in effect until 1943. During that period of time, thousands of Chinese immigrants, including Fongs grandfather, were put into jail on Angel Island. Many Chinese and Asian American organizations have expressed their support for ACR 42.
