China Publishes First Report on Gay Men
Sing Tao Daily, Posted: Feb 10, 2006
BEIJING – China published its first report on gay men, titled “Chinese MSM (men who have sex with men): Survey on Sex and the State of Self-Identity,” reports the Chinese language Sing Tao Daily. The report, written by noted Chinese scholar and writer Tong Ge, is supported by the U.S.-based Ford Foundation and published by the Beijing Gender Consultation Center. The report interviewed more than 400 gay couples and their sexual experience in a society that shuns homosexuals. The report illustrates the emotional and sexual interaction of gay couples and their families. Though some media observers say that homosexuality is becoming more visible in public discussion, even some young people have a difficult accepting it, reports the Sing Tao. When Fudan University opened China’s first-ever college symposium on homosexuality, some students walked out in the middle of the first lecture.

The tone of this article is ambiguous at best. Written in such a way to appeal to Western sentiment, I have to wonder whether the reason why some young people are not comfortable with the concept is because of communist culture -- and what in communist culture is at odds with homosexuality. I am not willing to so easily write the Chinese off as homophobic when I know they are working under cultural constructs that would appear "weird" to most liberal and progressive constructs.
-->Is there anywhere one can read the report -- in English?
Thank you,
