Latino Day Laborer Beaten by White Teenagers

El Diario/La Prensa, Posted: Aug 19, 2009

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. A Latino day laborer was beaten brutally last Friday in Patchogue, N.Y., the same town where Marcelo Lucero was killed by a group of teenagers last year, reports El Diario/La Prensa. According to the news report, the victim, a 22-year-old Ecuadorian man, was on Division and West Avenue, when three white teenagers began harassing him. They reportedly knocked him to the ground, kicked him in the head and back, asking him what he was doing in the country. Minutes later, a bystander at the nearby train station saw the victim and called for help. According to police detective Dominick Varrone, the suspects have not been found, but the incident is under investigation as a possible hate crime. This is the first serious hate crime in the area committed against a Latino since the death of 38-year-old Ecuadorian Marcelo Lucero who was attacked and killed by six teenagers.
