One Person Dies of Suicide Every Two Minutes in China

World Journal, Posted: Sep 11, 2008

BEIJING A recent study by the China Association for Mental Health found that suicide has become a leading cause of death in China after heart attacks, cancer, respiratory system diseases and accidents. The World Journal reports that since the year 2000, nine people in China have attempted suicide every two minutes and eight of them were saved. About 250,000 people in China die every year as a result of suicide. About 90 percent of these take place in rural areas. Elder people living in rural areas are five times more likely to commit suicide than elders living in Chinese cities, according to the report. The study also found that the suicide rate among women is 25 percent higher than that among men.
