Gangs Recruiting New Chinese Immigrants

World Journal, Posted: Sep 29, 2009

LOS ANGELES Asian gangs in Los Angeles are slowly gaining power by recruiting ne Chinese immigrants, especially those from China, reports the World Journal.

Inspector Steve Kim of the Los Angeles Police Gang Task Force told the paper that Asian gang recruiters remain active at local cafes, teashops, schools and other areas populated by Chinese immigrant students. Oftentimes, these activities lead to crimes such as shootings and robberies. Hong Deng, a lawyer interviewed by he paper, said immigrant parents are always busy making living and thus ignore their childrens needs. As a result, young people find support outside the family and join the gang. Asian gang members are not easy to identify, some of them maintain good grades and act like role model in schools.

Asian gangs often associate with drugs, identity and prostitution, the paper reported. They make up about a quarter of all gangs active in Southern California.
