Maria Elena Salinas Interviews Barack Obama

La Opinion, Posted: Sep 19, 2008

NORFOLK, Va. -- In a La Opinion editorial, Univision News Anchor Maria Elena Salinas reflects on her recent exclusive interview with Democratic Presidential Candidate, Senator Barack Obama. This was the first official interview after he won the Democratic Party nomination. Obamas response to his lower poll ratings was that they are exactly where they were before the conventions. The key is to discuss matters of interest to people: Who has a plan to restore jobs and create new jobs? Who has a plan for providing medical assistance, especially in the Hispanic community, he asserted. Obama addressed immigration raids suggesting that they are tactics to prevent people from focusing on the total failure of the immigration system. Salinas also mentions that Republican Presidential Candidate Senator John McCain has argued that Obama wants to unilaterally renegotiate NAFTA, but Obama explained that he believes free-trade treaties should also benefit workers." He said he intends to visit Latin America in the future.
