Immigrant Groups Fear More Attacks

La Opinin, Posted: Apr 05, 2009

LOS ANGELES -- In the wake of the shootings at an immigrant services center in Binghamton, N.Y., some organizations in Southern California are afraid that the attack could set off more violent acts against groups that help immigrants, reports La Opinin. Violence against immigrant organizations has been increasing in recent months, according to Socorro Quinonez, director of the Community Plaza in San Bernardino.

One immigrant told La Opinin that after hearing what happened in New York, she was afraid to attend her citizenship class at the Todec Legal Center in Perris, Calif. The class, which usually has 25 to 40 students, was practically empty on Saturday.

Elsa Valdes, a sociologist at California State University in San Bernardino, explained that historically economic downturns have resulted in violent acts in which citizens of other countries tend to be the most vulnerable. "What surprises me is that this has not happened before," she said.
