L.A. School District Launches Initiative for Underperforming Schools

Eastern Group Publications, Posted: Jul 12, 2008

LOS ANGELESThe Los Angeles Unified School District is forming a partnership to transform its lowest-performing schools in low-income communities into educational centers with sufficient resources, Eastern Group Publications reports. The initiative to transform the schools was the result of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosas attempt to take over the district. Under the initiative, the targeted schools will operate year-around with increased decision-making power for the local school and student body. Teachers will be hired by local school committees. All students will take a college prep curriculum, and advisers will work with kindergarten, sixth and ninth graders to build new school cultures.
