Indian Country Senior Programs Receive $3 Million

Indian Country Today, Posted: Mar 26, 2009

The Department of Health and Human Services will award $3 million in Recovery Act funding to low-income Indian country seniors, reports Indian Country Today. Beginning in April, states will allocate funds to organizations that provide nutritional services in their communities. The federal aid will benefit some 246 tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations that have suffered from severe cutbacks.

Across the country, older Americans depend on senior centers and home delivery programs for regular, healthy meals. Today, more senior citizens are in need, but the programs they depend on are on the brink of reducing their services or closing down," said Vice President Joe Biden.

The Recovery Act is providing $65 million for nutritional services through senior centers and other community sites across the United States, of which $32 million will go toward home delivered meal services assisting elders.
