Impoverished Chinese Men Find Wives in Vietnam

Chongqing Evening News, Posted: Jan 28, 2010

CHONGQING, China Many low income and poorly educated young men from Chinas farmlands are seeking wives in Vietnam, reported the Chongqing Evening News. 22-year-old Hong Lin, a worker with a monthly income of $300, is one of them. He is going to Vietnam next month looking for marriage opportunities. Hong said he has tried very hard to date girls within the country, through matchmaking and by changing jobs to factories with more girls, but once they find out he comes from the impoverished farmland, they refuse his overtures. Then Hong heard from friends that he could find a wife in Vietnam because he has economic advantage over the Vietnamese workers, who on average earn about $70 a month. After calculating all the expenses he needed for the trip, Hong decided to give it a try. Hongs coworkers, who also have a hard time finding girlfriends, said they might follow Hongs path if he succeeds.

According to a recent report, of the workers who come from farmlands and aged 21 to 30, 36 percent of them cannot find girlfriends. Therefore, they are now seeking wives from other countries with greater economic disadvantage, such as Vietnam, Burma, and Indonesia.
