Count Us In!

YO! Youth Outlook Multimedia in partnership with the City and County of San Francisco held a one of a kind contest for San Francisco youth ages 14-21. We gave away over $10,000 in cash and prizes to young people who could use their artistic abilities to creatively express why the 2010 Census is important for their community.

Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a national survey that aims to count every person living in the United States on one particular day, April 1st. The information the Census gets is used by government to determine how to distribute funds around the country to communities like yours based on population. As many of the young people in high schools and community based organizations around the city learned, these numbers help to plan for schools, community programs, transportation, and clinical services in your neighborhood. These numbers also determine how many representatives each district gets to elect to state and federal government.

On Friday March 26, 2010, YO! and NAM held an event to honor the more than 100 entries that were submitted to the Count Us In! contest. Jane Kim, President of the San Francisco Board of Education; Adrienne Pon, Executive Director of the Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs at City Hall; and ethnic media were present to honor the SF young people who displayed artistic ingenuity in their advertisements for the Census.
